It has been a busy week in the world of netball, with many ANZ Championship teams starting to work on their squad of 12 of season 2013, with announcements regarding player signings being made by the Melbourne Vixens, Queensland Firebirds and West Coast Fever.

The Fever have kept nine of their players for next season as coach Norma Plummer beings to shape her team for the 2012 season. Australian Diamonds shooters Catherine Cox and Caitlin Bassett are returning to the side, as are their mid-courters, Ashleigh Brazill, Shae Bolton, Andrea Gilmore and Verity Simmons. Defenders Chanel Gomes, Eboni Beckford-Chambers and Susan Fuhrmann also return to the squad.

Today, The Fever have also announced that Vixen’s shooter, Kate Beveridge, will be joining them for next year’s campaign, signing a 2 year contract with the team. This will be the the first time that Beveridge will play for Western Australia since 2007, when she represented the Perth Orioles.

There have been a lot of player movements in the Vixens and Firebirds camp this offseason, with these two teams being the only ones to date who have lost players from their line-ups.

The Firebirds’ inspirational captain, Lauren Nourse, announced yesterday her decision to retire from netball. Nourse had represented Queensland in netball at this level for nine years, and was also a member of the Australian Diamonds netball team. The Firebirds have signed on Nicola Gray, who is currently playing for the NSW Waratahs in the Australian Netball League.

The Firebirds have also lost two players to the Melbourne Vixens, with mid-courter Elissa Macleod and defender Amy Steel, making the move back to Melbourne. Both girls played for Melbourne in the previous competition and have signed a two-year contract with the Vixens.

The Vixens have also been busy shaping their team. In the hunt for a new coach after Julie Hoornweg announced her retirement, the Vixens are still making signing decisions for next season. With the retirement of Chelsey Tregear and the moving of Julie Corletto to the Northern Mystics, the Vixens have signed Steel and Macleod in their side. The have also re-signed star shooter, Karyn Howarth, who played a massive role in the Vixens success in the 2012 season.

The Melbourne Vixens also announced yesterday that star mid-courter Sarah Wall, will not be offered a contract with the team for 2013. Wall started playing for Melbourne since 2005, being a member of the Melbourne Phoenix for three years before the competition changed to the ANZ Championship. She was also a member of the Melbourne Vixens’ 2009 grand final winning team, and a member of the 2010 Queensland Firebirds team until an injury to her ACL ended her season prematurely.

More updates to come as they are announced for the 2013 season.
