Melbourne Vixens and Australian Diamonds star defender, Julie Corletto, yesterday announced her decision to leave the Vixens for the 2013 season, signing a contract with New Zealand franchise, the Northern Mystics.

Corletto has decided to make the move across to New Zealand to be closer to her husband, Daryl Corletto, who is playing for the New Zealand Breakers in the NBL.

The Netball Victoria Acting Chief Executive Officer, Russell James, said that the Vixens are disappointed to lose someone like Julie, however they have taken into consideration that she may not re-sign when discussing the 2013 Vixens team.

“Our discussions regarding the Vixens squad for 2013 over the past few months have always taken into consideration the possibility of Julie not re-signing and therefore we are well positioned to secure a replacement or replacements that will complement the current squad.”

This decision is following her appeal to Netball Victoria last year, when she asked to be let out of her contract a year early due to lack of court time in Goal Defence, her favoured position. The Vixens refused this appeal and Julie remained with the Vixens for the 2012 season in the final year of her contract.

The Vixens, who were minor premiers in this year’s ANZ Championship, lost by 3 points in the grand final to New Zealand side, the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Magic.

They will now start to rebuild their team for the 2013 season, with 2 key players to their successful season leaving the side – Julie Corletto, who is moving to the Mystics and Chelsey Tregear, who announced her retirement from netball at the Vixens MVP awards in July.

The Vixens are also in the hunt for a new coach, after their coach since the competition started, Julie Hoornweg, announced that she will be taking a break from sport to focus on spending more time with her family.

The Vixens are expected to make more announcements in the coming weeks regarding their 2013, said James.

“We are excited by the shape our 2013 team is taking and look forward to making announcements regarding player signings over the coming weeks.”
