Australia’s Brightest Diamonds

The 2012 Australian Diamonds team of 15 has been announced today, with a mixture of youth and experience being chosen in the team. The squad of 22 players from the ANZ Championship season embarked on their 4 day selection camp in Canberra earlier this week, where they were put through their paces in various fitness and match-play training.

The team, which was chosen by coach Lisa Alexander based on their performance at the camp, features a number of crowd favourites. Last year’s World Championship Captain, Natalie von Bertouch, returns to captain the national team, whilst veteran shooter, Catherine Cox, has been named Vice-Captain following her fine display in goal shooter in the West Coast Fever’s final game of the season.

The team has also kept a number of their 2011 World Championship winning side in the team, with star goal attack for the Queensland Firebirds, Natalie Medhurst, mid-court player, Chelsea Pitman and winner of the 2011 Liz Ellis Diamond award, Laura Geitz, all returning to the team following their impressive ANZ Championship season.

The Adelaide Thunderbirds also have World Championship players returning to the team. Along with captain Natalie von Bertouch, shooter Erin Bell, returns to the team, whilst last years’ Diamonds squad member, Rebecca Bulley, who won the Adelaide Thunderbirds MVP last weekend makes an appearance in the team following her outstanding season.

But two key players are missing in the team from the Thunderbirds, with star defender, Sharni Layton, pulling out of the try outs a few days ago due to a shoulder injury which requires an operation.

Wing Defender for the Thunderbirds, Renae Hallinan, also missed out on selection, despite the stand-out season she has had with her new team.

The leadership team for the NSW Swifts all make an appearance in the team – with co-captains Mo’onia Gerrard and Kimberlee Green retaining their spots in the team, whilst vice-captain, Susan Pratley has been named in the team, impressing this season and winning the Swifts MVP award.

Young West Coast Fever player, Ashleigh Brazill, is making her debut for the Australian Diamonds, after competing in the 2011 Australian FastNet team and being awarded Fever’s MVP of the season.

Caitlin Bassett from the Fever also makes an appearance in the team, following her incredible efforts in the green and gold dress at last years’ World Championships.

Runners-up of the ANZ Championship season have many players headlining the Diamonds team, with last years’ Australian goal defender, Julie Corletto, being named in the Diamonds team. Bianca Chatfield makes her return to the team, after not being selected last year, following her impressive season leading the Vixens to the minor premiership, and gun mid-courter, Madison Browne also makes her return to the Diamonds team.

The Australian Diamonds netball team is bursting with talent in all areas of the court, setting up for what will be an exciting international series later this year. The Diamonds will take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the Constellation Cup, before the Quad-Series against England, South Africa and New Zealand.

The Diamond’s first game will be in the Constellation Cup at Hisense Arena in Melbourne on the 16th of September.
