Rocky Opals start campaign with a win

Australia’s Women’s basketball team “The Opals”, started their 2012 Olympic campaign with a 16 point win over host nation Great Britain (Final Score: 74-58). The Opals were led by Australia’s Olympic team captain Lauren Jackson with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Suzy Batkovic added 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Straight off the tip-off, the Opals showed their talents as Liz Cambage (who was in the jump too) scored an easy bucket in the paint, drew the foul and was sent to the line for a 3-point play.

The first quarter saw the Opals struggle to dominate against a low ranked opponent with a series of turnovers and fouls. The Opals still managed to score but Great Britain managed to hang on and keep up. By the end of the first, the Opals lead  16-11 but with 9 turnovers.

The second quarter saw the Opals return to form as they broke away on the scoreboard with 18 unanswered points and held a 13 point lead at half time, 39 – 26.

The Opals kept their lead in double digits and finished strong despite limited minutes from Liz Cambage Jenna O’Hea both due to foul trouble.

Off the court, Australians could be heard cheering for our Opals despite a dominant support from the locals. John Casey’s unique commentary quirks which we haven’t heard since the NBL was on Fox Sports some time ago, provided a great television viewer experience too.

The win gave the Opals the momentum they need to help get them through a tough group stage with strong teams from France, Russia and Brazil. Australia have taken home silver in the last three Olympics and the motivation to win gold is very high.

The Opals face France next at 11:29pm (AEDT), coverage on Foxtel London 4 & 4HD.
