Co-Captain of the Melbourne Vixens Sharelle McMahon has announced that she is will not be participating in the 2012 ANZ Netball Championships season at a press conference on Saturday morning.
Sharelle took to twitter moments before the conference, tweeting “Exciting news… about to go into press conference to announce that I’m pregnant!! Just told the girls too… they are thrilled too!”
Sharelle is three months into her pregnancy, resulting in her having to postpone her return to professional netball after a season ending Achilles injury last year against the Queensland Firebirds. But the former Australian Diamonds captain says that this does not mark the end of her netball career and she is keeping her options open.
Sharelle has been part of the leadership group for Netball Victoria for many years, co-captaining for the Melbourne Phoenix with former shooter Eloise Southby before going on to go co-captain the Vixens along with goal defender Bianca Chatfield.
This will be the first time the Vixens will have a new leadership make up since 2008 and will be the first time Sharelle will not be included in a captaincy position since the Melbourne Phoenix. While Sharelle will not be part of the playing group for season 2012, she is still determined to be involved with the team in coaching.
“Whatever my role, I will be the team’s biggest supporter on the sideline,” Sharelle said today.
Netball fans across Victoria, and Australia, have taken to social networking sites to show both their excitement for the great news and their disappointment that they will have to wait to see inspirational netball star take to the court once more.
Netball Victoria will apply to the Trans-Tasman Netball League to allow a replacement player for the upcoming season, starting on the first of April.
The Vixens are expected to make an announcement on the new leadership team, and Sharelle’s replacement player in the coming weeks.
